An Introduction

When it comes to video, it is hard to distinguish the differences between entertainment and art. Some will say there is a certain amount of fluidity between the two, as if they can be both. Entertainment film and art film are two distinct things, though they both can draw from conventions of the other for inspiration. The intent, or the purpose of the piece, is one of the major components that can determine whether or not a piece is seen as entertainment or as art. After the intended purpose the piece has been chosen, the next portion, which is the second major component, is the process of creating the piece. This encompasses the creation and production of the piece. It is the combination of the purpose and the process that dictate what setting the piece is viewed in, art or entertainment.

My Claim

Art film is distinct from entertainment film, or the Hollywood industry, because Art films can have a broader range of purposes rather than be confined solely to narrative, as well as the process of creating the piece, including crew size and editing styles, is more independent and allows for more creative liberty and experimentation. It is because of these reasons VCU Film students are separated from the Cinema students because the Film students are being cultivated into artisanal filmmakers whereas the Cinema students are being trained to work in a professional setting similar to that of the Hollywood film industry.
